PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As the flagship of the NYCHHC system, Bellevue Hospital suffered catastrophic outages that shut down the facility for six months during Hurricane Sandy.
This project was conceived to ensure that, should there ever be another Hurricane Sandy, Bellevue Hospital will continue in operation to serve the residents of New York. Guth DeConzo is providing Construction Management services for the installation of a gas-fired 4MW reciprocating engine manufactured by Siemens. The state-of-the-art 4 MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system is a base load for onsite power generation and thermal energy at Bellevue Hospital. The project will utilize a unique “virtual wire” application, which has only been used once other time within the Con Edison network (NYU Langone). The CHP will supplement Con Edison power and steam delivered to the campus. Furthermore, the CHP will provide resilient backup power in the event of a sustained grid power disruption or disaster. The project required extensive infrastructure piping/systems from the plant location in an adjacent parking area at grade to the 13th floor mechanical room. The system allows for complete islanding of the facility from the Con Edison system when it operates in parallel with the existing 9MW emergency generator system. Full automation of ATSs and the Con Edison distribution breaker system allows for remote islanding and synching of the CHP system.
